Tutoring
Academic Tutoring
The Growth Opportunity Center has a very professional and active tutoring program that services students in grades K-12, as well as college age and adult learners. Tutoring is provided in many content areas including reading, mathematics, and writing. Tutoring is conducted all year round. Tutoring sessions are conducted at GOC, Gloria Dei Church, in homes, and other public places such as libraries. Tutoring is not conducted at our satellite offices. Most lessons are one hour, but 1/2 hour lessons can be provided for very young children or those with attention problems.
Our tutors are able to work effectively with a wide range of behavior/emotional and learning problems, and have the ability to see beyond the "subject matter." They are knowledgeable about behavioral, emotional, and learning problems, organizational difficulties, and executive function difficulties. They act as an academic "coach," not just "tutor." Tutors communicate with teachers, parents, and therapists (if necessary) in order to take on a "team" approach.
By mentoring each student, we mean to incorporate all of the above, not just focus on subject matter. We help the learner in whatever way necessary to improve academic functioning. We help them to discover their learning style and understand their own strengths and weaknesses as learners. We teach them how to compensate for weaknesses.
Most GOC tutors have master's degrees and substantial backgrounds. All tutors have current Child Abuse and Criminal History Clearance Checks.
SAT Preparation
The distinguishing factor in our SAT preparatory program is the ability to give individual attention to the "diagnosis" of students' needs in order to improve their scores. Many of the SAT students we have assisted in the past have had learning and/or attention problems and have really needed individual attention. Our program emphasizes "early" preparation for SAT. Most young people begin preparing much too late, especially those with learning problems.
